About MEPCO

Originally, electricity supply in Pakistan was managed by various agencies in both the public and private sectors. To unify and coordinate the development of water and power resources, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established in 1958 through the WAPDA Act, 1958.

In an effort to enhance service quality, public sector organizations are being reformed and privatized. Since 1988, Pakistan’s energy sector has been undergoing restructuring. WAPDA has been divided into water and power wings, with the power wing further split into Generation Companies (GNECOs), National Transmission & Dispatch Companies (NTDC), and Distribution Companies (DISCOs). These DISCOs directly interface with consumers and must be responsive to their needs and demands.
